Psyllium Husk Powder · Soluble fiber · Prebiotic effects · Cholesterol management · Heart healthy Taken from the seeds of the self-fertile Plantago asiatica herb, psyllium is a soluble fiber known for its water solubility and absorption. When combined with water, it becomes a highly viscous, gel-like substance resistant to immediate digestion. Because of this, it is believed to help promote digestion and is frequently used as the main ingredient in most over-the-counter fiber supplements. Studies indicate that psyllium husk can be beneficial for both constipation and diarrhea relief. By binding to partially digested food as it passes through the stomach, psyllium functions as a bulk-forming laxative that helps keep bowel movements regular. Psyllium husk also has the ability to promote feelings of fullness and decreased appetite. When combined with a fiber-rich diet, it has been shown to have an effect on weight loss and overall body fat. As a dietary supplement, take 5 grams (just under 1 tbsp) one to three times daily with at least 8 ounces of water, or as directed by a physician. Due to its absorbency, psyllium husk may cause choking if it is not consumed with enough liquid. Seek out medical attention if vomiting or difficulty swallowing occurs. Always consult your health care provider before taking any supplements. Pregnant or lactating women, people with existing medical conditions, or people taking medications should consult their health care provider/s before taking any dietary supplement.
