The heat pump works according to this principle: it absorbs energy from the air molecules and transfers it into the water (like the principle behind air conditioning, but in reverse). It does not directly convert electricity to heat. So the operation only requires very limited electric input, hence its heat conversion rate can reach a score of COP 5.6. In other words, for every cent of electricity spent, 5.6 times more heat is generated. So it can heat up a lot of water while using only a small amount of electricity. As long as the ambient temperature is higher than 40F, it can work normally to keep the pool warm and comfortable. No other type of heaters can do this job better. The fact of the matter is that solar heating is too dependent on weather conditions and the amount of sunlight, hence limiting its usage. It is during colder days when the pool needs heating, but that is also likely when the sky isn't very bright. Without enough sunlight, solar heaters cannot run efficiently. Ironically, when the sun is out, the pool is already warm, so there will hardly be any need to use a solar heater.
