Attach the air line into the pump, connect the air stone to the other end of air line. 3. Place the pump above the aquarium or bucket if possible. Or you need to add a check valve between air pump and air stone to prevent back siphoning. 4. Plug the pump in and adjust the knob. Remember to create a "drip loop" for the power cord. It is whisper quiet on low, and has a noticeable hum in a silent room when running on highest. If you set between low to medium, the sound of the bubbles are actually louder than this pump vibration. It has a smooth rotating dial to control the output. A higher setting generates more air and bubbles, so it will certainly increase the noise level a little bit. Rubber pad on bottom will help reduce noise and keep the pump in place. Put it on top of a blanket or soundproofing material would absorb some of the vibrations and make it quieter.
