The rungs should be approximately 20 inches long and 18 inches at their widest parts. Another important dimension is the distance between the indents at both ends of rungs. Your existing ladder should have indents that are 18 inches apart or you may not be able to install the rungs properly. Older models may not have the exact shape profile, so you also need to take that into consideration.
