To emulate the natural feel of paper, a display foil has to imitate the vibrations of a pencil gliding over a rough surface (e.g. paper). You could use a matte protector, sandblasted plastic sheets, that are basically scratched until rough. You get an okayish paper-feel with that approach, but it comes with a major draw-back: lots of refractions, the rainbow-effect with colored dots on your display. This makes reading and watching videos almost unbearable on an iPad. For the Paperlike, we developed a new surface technology, called Nanodots. Tiny particles sprinkled on top of the foil, create the vibrations while minimizing refractions. Where the magic happens. Jan Sapper, Paperlikes founder and creator always wanted to work paperless and was super excited when the iPad Pro and the Pencil first came out. But when he tried them, he hated the feeling of hard rubber writing on glass. It felt awkward, and the Pencil was sliding all over the screen. He needed a solution. But he couldn't find one. So Jan tinkered around, tried all existing rough surfaces, fine-tuned the principle and developed what you know now as the Paperlike. That was 2017, and a Kickstarter campaign showed, he was not the only one with those issues and Paperlike, the company, was born. In 2019 a new and much-improved version of the Paperlike with a Nanodots surface was developed. Now backed by a small and dedicated team it again launched on Kickstarter.
