The Cotman pocket plus set contains: 12 assorted Cotman water color half pans and a Cotman pocket brush (no.5). this set has a soft, rubberized pop-out thumb loop providing optimum comfort for handheld use and features a number of different mixing surfaces; one that clips onto either end of the set and an Internal mixing palette for more shallow washes. Includes the colors: cadmium yellow pale hue, cadmium yellow hue, cadmium red pale hue, Alizarin crimson hue, ultramarine, cobalt blue hue, sap green, viridian hue, yellow ochre, burnt Sienna, burnt Umber, and Chinese white. Pigments derive from a number of sources: Some are natural products, notably the earths, eg. umbers, ochres; others come from metal compounds and are sometimes termed 'traditional' or 'genuine', eg. ultramarine. The distillation of petroleum yields an ever widening range of organic pigments which are often termed as 'modern'. Many of the pigments used in Cotman are organic. The Cotman Watercolour range has a more uniform consistency than the Professional Watercolour range and this benefits beginners as there is less to learn about each individual pigment. The Cotman Watercolour range also relates to the Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour range, e.g. Burnt Sienna in both ranges has the same hue. This enables artists to use colours from both ranges with minimal adjustment to their technique. Traditionally the white of the paper provides the brilliance to watercolour and can be used as highlights. However, some artists utilize Chinese White for highlights at the end of their painting or in dulling some colour mixtures down.
