Dr. Kenzo Kase is an American-trained chiropractor, best known as the inventor of Kinesio Tex Tape and the Kinesio Taping Method. Elastic therapeutic tape has become a common modality in rehabilitation, and it started with Dr. Kase. Kinesio Tape is highly recognized in the sports arena; however, its origins were not directly related to sports. Dr. Kase recognized the need for a new approach in the 1970s when he was observing and treating rheumatoid arthritis patients. He wanted a modality that would allow his patients to continue to receive the benefit of his treatment in-between visits, to “take his hands home with them.” Dr. Kase designed the Kinesio Taping Method to facilitate the body’s natural healing powers, and Kinesio Tape to meet the unique requirements of his method. Forty years later, his method has changed how rehabilitation is practiced. Each roll of Kinesio Tape continues Dr. Kase’s vision, by allowing patients to take the treatment home. Kinesio Tex Classic employs a unique combination of thinness, elasticity and adhesive wave pattern that microscopically lifts the skin and creates a space between the skin and underlying tissues. This results in relief from soreness, pressure and irritation caused by injury or chronic conditions and can also enhance lymphatic drainage. The elasticity of Kinesio Tape also provides muscular support to injured or weak areas without restricting range of motion. Kinesio Tape is made of 100% high-grade cotton for comfort and breathability, and contains no latex or medications. The backing contains a light, medical-grade adhesive made of 100% hypoallergenic acrylic. Unlike traditional athletic tape, most Kinesio Tape applications can be worn for 3-5 days to allow the therapeutic benefits to continue, 24 hours per day. Kinesio Tape is made to withstand sweating, showering and swimming without coming off or irritating skin. The Kinesio Taping Method is an approach to therapeutic taping that involves taping over and around muscles and joints, rather than wrapping them tightly as conventional athletic taping does. This increases circulation to the injured area, as well as lymphatic drainage, which reduces swelling, bruising and pressure on sensitive pain receptors. When worn continuously, Kinesio Tape provides support without restricting range of motion and can accelerate the healing process and limit down time.
