This advanced meter for spirometry includes a digital diary and measures air flow velocity and volume (FEV1) to indicate early warning signs for impending asthmatic incidents or conditions. Using these measurements in conjunction with a doctor's consultation allows patients with asthma, COPD and other lung diseases to manage their condition. What is PEF: PEF is Peak Expiratory Flow, or in other words measures how fast you can push air out of your lungs. What is FEV: FEV is Forced Expiratory Volume, or in other words measures how much air a person can exhale during a forced breath. Step 1: Standing up, hold the peak flow meter as shown with both hands. Step 2: Take a deep breath and blow into the mouthpiece as hard as you can for as long as possible. Step 3: As you exhale, bend forward as shown to push all the air from your lungs. Step 4: Measure your peak flow rate twice daily and close to the same time each day. Whether you are using national standards, or your own customized numbers, the green, yellow and red bars on the display are a quick visual reference to show how your results compare.
